April 18, 1980: Nelms Begins Stellar Career in D.C.

THIS WEEK IN REDSKINS HISTORY: On April 18, 1980, the Redskins signed a Canadian Football League player who starred during the early Joe Gibbs glory years: kick returner Mike Nelms. In five seasons as a Redskin, Nelms amassed 6,067 punt and kickoff return yards, one of his many team records. Despite average speed for a return man, the 6-1, 190-pounder had the explosiveness to gain big yardage, and the power, finesse and smarts to break tackles. You couldn’t count him down when he was boxed in. And he rarely signaled fair catch, preferring instead to throw his body in with the wolves. He made the Pro Bowl three times and was named to the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team.
