Sept. 1, 1991: Redskins Rout Lions to Kick Off Championship Season

On Sept. 1, 1991, the Redskins opened the season with a 45-0 rout of the Lions at RFK Stadium.  Everything clicked.  Quarterback Mark Rypien completed 15 throws for 183 yards and two touchdowns, cornerback Darrell Green intercepted two passes for a defense that held the Lions to 154 yards, and Brian Mitchell returned a punt 69 yards for a score.  The 45-point margin could have been larger, but backup QB Jeff Rutledge took a knee four times near Detroit’s goal line as the clock ran out.  It was the Redskins’ first of three shutouts early in the 1991 season, when they romped to a 14-2 mark and an eventual win in Super Bowl XXVI.
