Sports Illustrated: John Riggins' Run in Super Bowl XVII

EXCERPT: It is the most famous play in Washington Redskins history and is perched near the top of the greatest moments in nearly four decades of Super Bowls. Grandly taking his cue, John Riggins carved a spot in football immortality. With 10 minutes left in Super Bowl XVII on Jan. 30, 1983, the Redskins' superstar ran 43 yards for a touchdown on fourth and one to erase a 17-13 Miami Dolphins lead. The Redskins went on to win 27-17, securing an accomplishment the Nation’s Capital had lacked for 40 mostly wrenching years – an NFL championship. The victory propelled the Redskins to greater glory. They laid claim as one of the premier NFL teams over the next decade, a span highlighted by two more Super Bowl wins under legendary coach Joe Gibbs. For Riggins, it was the pinnacle of a celebrated 14-year career in which he rushed for more than 11,000 yards and earned induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
